Bhoothakaalam (meaning "Past") is a 2022 Indian Malayalam-language psychological horror film directed and written by Rahul Sadasivan. The lead roles are played by Shane Nigam and Revathy. Anwar Rasheed produced the film through Plan T Films, with co-production from Shane Nigam Films. Gopi Sunder composed the background score, while Shane Nigam made his debut as both a music director and producer. The film was praised by critics for its atmosphere, sound design, and acting, and Revathy won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actress for her performance.
The story follows Asha, a schoolteacher who supports her household alone while living in a rented house with her son Vinu and her ailing mother, who later dies. Vinu, a pharmacy graduate, has been unemployed for two years. Struggling with the hopelessness of joblessness, he starts smoking and drinking again. Asha, who takes medication for clinical depression, becomes increasingly angry at Vinu for not finding work. Vinu then begins to notice strange, unexplainable events in the house and senses a malevolent presence. At first, he thinks it is his mother's resentment, but realizes the entity is separate. After a public drunken fight, Asha and her brother convince Vinu to see a counselor named George, but Vinu refuses to cooperate. When Asha starts experiencing the terrifying phenomena herself, she believes her son. George investigates and learns from neighbors that the house has a dark history: years ago, the owner's son killed his wife and daughter before hanging himself. A later tenant, a bank manager, survived an attack but was left permanently paralyzed. George finds a pattern: the house targets tenants already suffering severe emotional distress, driving them to irrational and violent behavior.
Vinu tries to tell his girlfriend, but she dismisses him. His uncle, believing Vinu is insane, prepares to have him committed. Overwhelmed by depression and hopelessness, Asha poisons their dinner. But during the meal, they have an honest conversation and reconcile. Asha throws away the poisoned food. Immediately afterward, the spirits attack them violently. Working together, Asha and Vinu survive the night and escape. The next morning, with help from George and the uncle, they pack up and leave the cursed house for good.
